The Smart Reset Method is a developmentally layered, body-first framework for self-regulation in children and adolescents aged 3 to 18. Developed in Belgium for sport, family and school.
When tension rises, the brain reorganises. Resources shift toward the systems that handle threat and away from the systems that handle reasoning, planning and language.
This is why instruction stops landing in exactly the moment it is needed most. Not simply because the child will not listen, but because access to reasoning, language and flexible attention is temporarily reduced.
Most support for children starts with words. The Smart Reset Method starts with the body, and adds the words once the body can carry them again.
The method covers children and adolescents from 3 to 18. It is layered by developmental stage, because a five-year-old cannot regulate alone and a fifteen-year-old should not be told how.
The adult's role changes at every stage: from co-regulating, to prompting, to stepping back. The method makes that shift explicit rather than leaving it to instinct.
It also gives the child, the parent and the coach one shared language. What is trained on court is recognisable at home and in the classroom, in the same words. That shared reference is what allows the method to transfer between contexts instead of staying inside the training session.
Children learn to recognise rising tension before it takes over, to name their own state in words the adults around them understand, and to use age-appropriate actions that restore access to attention, language and choice.
Parents learn to read the same signals at home, and to know when to co-regulate, when to prompt, and when to step back. That judgement is usually left to instinct. Here it is taught.
Coaches and teachers learn to recognise the same states under performance and task load, where they look different and escalate faster, and to respond without overriding the regulation the child is building.
Because all three work from one reference, the correction stops being something done to the child and becomes something the child can eventually do alone. The method calls this the Regulatory Trinity, and it is the reason the same language holds on court, at the kitchen table and in the classroom.
The theoretical framework is set out in an academic paper in preparation, co-authored with Prof. Leen Haerens (Ghent University).
The Smart Reset Method is preventive and developmental in nature. It is not therapy, and it does not replace clinical care.
